Frequently asked questions
Practical answers about getting started with speech therapy at our Padstow clinic.
Getting started
- Do I need a referral to see a speech pathologist?
- No. You can contact us directly and book an appointment. A referral is only needed if you want to claim a Medicare rebate through your GP's chronic disease management plan.
- How long is a session?
- We agree on session length when you book. Most therapy sessions run between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on age, goals and stamina.
- What happens at the first appointment?
- We talk about your concerns and history, get to know you or your child, and start looking at the skills you are worried about. We then explain what we think is happening and what the next steps could be.
- Is there a waiting list?
- Availability changes. Contact us and we will tell you what appointment times are currently open.
- At what age can my child start speech therapy?
- There is no minimum age. We support children from their earliest words onwards, and we also work with families of very young children on communication and feeding.
- Can you visit our home, preschool or school?
- Sometimes. Home, preschool and school visits depend on suitability and availability, so please ask when you enquire.
- What ages do you see?
- We work with children, from toddlers who are late to talk through to primary and high school students.
- How do we know if therapy is helping?
- We set goals with you at the start, review progress together and adjust the plan as needs change.
