Orofacial myology

Orofacial myology

We assess and support how the muscles of the face and mouth work.

What orofacial myology is

Orofacial myology looks at how the muscles of the lips, tongue, jaw and face work together for talking, chewing, swallowing and resting.

An assessment looks at tongue and lip rest posture, chewing and swallowing patterns, breathing habits, and how these relate to speech. We explain what we find in plain language.

If therapy is suitable, we teach exercises and habit changes and practise them together. We work with your dentist, orthodontist or doctor when that helps, with your consent.

Views on the role of tongue tie in speech differ, and the evidence is still developing. We assess each person individually and are clear about what therapy can and cannot address.
