Social communication
Social communication
Support for connecting and communicating with others, in your child's own way.
What it is
Social communication is how we use language and non-verbal cues to connect with others. It includes sharing interests, taking turns in conversation, and understanding and expressing feelings.
Every child communicates differently. Our approach is neurodiversity-affirming. We respect each child's communication style, including autistic ways of communicating, and focus on what helps them feel understood and confident.
Support may involve your child, family, preschool or school, so that the people around your child also know how best to communicate with them.
Signs to look for
Hard to join in
Joining play or conversation with other children feels hard or stressful.
Sharing and turn-taking
Back-and-forth conversation or sharing attention is tricky.
Expressing needs
Your child finds it hard to tell others what they need or how they feel.
Misunderstandings
Your child and others often misread each other's intentions.

Supporting the team
We share strategies with families, educators and other professionals.
